Gareth Jones: My wife can finally sleep
Trying to find a remedy for my snoring
Over the past couple of years, my good lady has complained about my snoring. On her advice I arranged an appointment with my G.P, who prescribed a nasal spray to help me stop snoring; unfortunately, it didn’t work. During the past twelve months my snoring had been getting progressively worse to the point where I had been waking myself up with the noise. This had a detrimental effect on my daily life as I was often tired and lethargic due to lack of sleep and, more importantly, I had a grumpy wife!
Due to the effect that snoring was having on my wife, she gave me an ultimatum – visit the doctor, sleep in the spare room or have a pillow over my head; after careful consideration, I chose the first option. My GP decided that I should be seen by a specialist, and an appointment was arranged in Llandudno Hospital.
Discovering Snorekil
Whilst waiting for my appointment I had cause to visit my dentist, who told me about a new oral anti-snoring device, the Snorekil, which might be able to help me. I attended my hospital appointment and, after a number of tests, I was advised by the consultant that I needed an operation and I would go on the waiting list.
In the meantime, I received my anti-snoring device and was advised by Paul from Sleepworks Products that it would take a short while to get used to wearing the device in my mouth. He advised that at first I should wear it for an hour or so whilst watching TV, and then gradually start wearing it for longer. I also noticed an increase in saliva whenever I wore the device, but this returned to normal after about 10 minutes.
My new (virtually snoreless) life with Snorekil
I have been using the device for about three months and whilst it was strange initially, I have got used to wearing it when going to sleep. Since starting to use Snorekil, I have not woken myself up by snoring. My wife says that my snoring has not completely disappeared, but it is getting better all the time. In her words, when I do snore it's “more of a purr”, whereas before Snorekil it was “like a tractor”.
